Virtual…er…augmented(?) reality

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

While the absurdity of the term “augmented reality” surely has thinkers like Baudrillard rolling in their graves (or beds), the technology - whatever you want to call it - is still pretty damn cool. Although this type of system has been employed for years by hollywood, Inglobe Technolgies is the first company (to my knowledge [...]

Something to end the summer with…

Monday, July 28th, 2008

I’m not really one to post quotes, but I don’t know how to disagree with this one:
“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”
- George Bernard Shaw, quoted in the Lexington Herald-Leader

Creativity vs. Design

Monday, April 21st, 2008

I stumbled on this article by Andy Rutledge over at “A List Apart,” who has some very interesting thoughts on creativity’s roll in design. Are they the same thing? Although Andy Rutledge is writing about web design, the role of creativity - especially in a professional context - has direct implications for architecture. I really [...]

The Finite Problem of Design

What is algorithmic design

algorithms are not always based on solution strategies concieved entirely in the human mind 19
unlike inventions, discoveries are not conceived or controlled by the human mind 19
an algorithm can describe either the way a problem is to be addressed by a human or by a computer

algorithm is a rationalized version of human [...]

Scripting project?

Informal

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

From Cecil Balmond:
The new humanism is to recognize the power of pattern, multilayered and catalytic, for we are part of it. Pattern is hard-wired into our consciousness in many ways, from simple aggregation of molecular structure to the spatial coiling within nature’s landscape. When we design we strike resonance with deep buried archetypes of form. [...]

Idea for Object Placement.

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Controlling objects with planes:

object centroid would have to travel exactly between lines
object could stretch, or not
OR could stretch only in + direction so that when lines converge the shape is different
would need a threshold for stretching/resizing as it is copied

Guess it pays to ride the train.

Insert temporally esoteric architectonic pharaseology here.
